October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection. Regular mammograms can help identify breast cancer before symptoms develop, giving patients and their healthcare providers important information to guide their care.
At Fulton County Health Center (FCHC), patients have access to advanced breast imaging, including 3D mammography, to help support early detection and breast health.
Why Are Mammograms Important?
A mammogram is an imaging exam that uses low-dose X-rays to look for changes in breast tissue. Screening mammograms can detect abnormalities that may be too small to feel during a self-exam or clinical examination.
Finding breast cancer early can improve treatment options and outcomes. Even if you feel healthy and have no noticeable symptoms, staying current with recommended screenings is an important part of preventive care.
The Benefits of 3D Mammography
FCHC offers 3D mammography, also known as digital breast tomosynthesis, an advanced imaging technology that captures multiple images of the breast from different angles. These images are combined to create a series of detailed views, helping radiologists examine breast tissue in layers rather than viewing it in a single two-dimensional image.
This technology offers several potential benefits:
- Improved cancer detection: 3D mammography can help identify certain breast cancers that may be difficult to see with conventional 2D imaging.
- A clearer look at breast tissue: Viewing tissue in layers can help reduce the effect of overlapping structures, which can sometimes hide abnormalities.
- Fewer callbacks for additional imaging: Studies have found that 3D mammography can reduce the number of patients asked to return for additional imaging after screening.
- More detailed evaluation: The additional views can help radiologists assess areas of concern more clearly.
As with any screening test, 3D mammography cannot detect every breast cancer. Your healthcare provider can help determine which screening approach is appropriate for you.
When Should You Schedule a Mammogram?
Screening recommendations depend on your age, personal medical history and individual risk factors. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening mammograms every two years for women ages 40 through 74 who are at average risk.
Women with a personal or family history of breast cancer, certain genetic risk factors or other concerns may need a different screening schedule. Talk with your healthcare provider about what is right for you.
If you notice a new lump, a change in breast shape or size, nipple changes or other unusual symptoms, contact your healthcare provider rather than waiting for your next routine screening.
How to Schedule a Mammogram at FCHC
Taking the next step toward breast health can be as simple as contacting your healthcare provider to discuss screening or obtaining the order needed for your mammogram.
FCHC’s Radiology Department provides screening and diagnostic mammography. To learn more or ask about scheduling, call 419-330-2651, option 1, or visit the FCHC Radiology webpage.
A valid, signed order from a physician or authorized healthcare provider is required before imaging services can be performed.
Before your appointment, plan to bring your photo ID, insurance card and current medication list. For your mammogram, avoid wearing deodorant, powder or lotion under your arms or on your breasts, as these products can interfere with the images.
Make Your Breast Health a Priority
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder to check when you last had a mammogram and determine whether it is time to schedule your next screening.
FCHC is committed to providing our community with access to imaging services that help patients take an active role in their health. Talk with your healthcare provider about your screening needs and take an important step toward early detection.
